イエスと律法・Jesus on Law
安息日のある日、イエズスが麦畑をおとおりになったときのこと、弟子たちが、麦穂をつんで手でもんで食べていると、ファリザイ人のある人々が、「なぜ,安息日に、していけないことをするのか？」と言った。(1)
そこでイエスは､「ダヴィドが、供のものとともにいて、飢えたときに、どんなことをしたかを読まなかったのか。彼は神の家にはいり、司祭のほか食べてはならない供えのパンを (2) とって食べ、供のものにもやった」。そして、「人の子は安息日の主である」とおおせられた。-ルカ6:1-5、Barbaro訳
（１）この非難は彼らが穀物を盗んでいるというところにではなく、穀物を刈入れることによって安息日の法を犯しているというところにあります。たとえ麦の穂を摘んで、その粒を食べているだけでも・・・・。
（２）サムエル記1の21:1-7a（キリストの時代の千年ほど前）ダビデは自分の命を守るためサウル王から逃げてきました。どんな食べ物も調達できないとわかり、逃避行を続けるためには食物が必要でしたから、ダビデは神への特別なささげ物として神殿に奉納されていた焼いたパンを食べました。
One Sabbath Jesus was going through the grainfields, and his disciples began to pick some heads of grain, rub them in their hands and eat the kernels. Some of the Pharisees asked, “Why are you doing what is unlawful on the Sabbath?”(1)
Jesus answered them, “Have you never read what David did when he and his companions were hungry? He entered the house of God, and taking the [dedicated] bread(2) he ate what is lawful only for priests to eat. And he also gave some to his companions.” Then Jesus said to them, “The Son of Man is Lord of the Sabbath.” (Luke 6:1-5 NIV)
(1) The accusation is not that they were stealing grain, but that they were violating the sabbath by harvesting grain–even though they were only plucking a head of barley and picking out the kernels.
(2) In 1 Sam 21:1-7a (a thousand years before the time of Christ) David was fleeing from King Saul to save his life. Finding no other food available and needing nourishment to continue his journey, he ate loaves of bread that had been dedicated in a temple as a special offering for God.
４０年前、あるカトリックの大司教がボストンでのエキュメニカル（全宗派）の集会での出来事について、ほかの大司教と話しています。「ミサのとき、突然大勢のプロテスタント信者が、ご聖体を拝領するために進みでてきました。そこで私は何をすべきか決めなくてはならなかった。」
（当時は他宗派のキリスト者に聖体を与えることはカトリック法では厳禁されていました。現在、教会法では特別の事情において許されますが、この話の状況では恐らくまだ技術的に許されないでしょう。）
この話を聞いていた相手の大司教は尋ねました。「それで何をしたって言うのですか？」
すると、当の大司教は答えました。「まぁ、『イエスは何をしただろうか』って自問しましたね。」
「まさか！ しなかったでしょうね！？」

ずっと以前アメリカでこの話をはじめて聞いたとき、その部屋に居た誰もが大笑いしました。しかし、数日前に日本でこの話を説教の中で話したところ、誰もが当惑顔でした。もしこれについて何が可笑しいのか掴めなかったなら、このブログについて数日中にお問い合わせください。お返事を差し上げるようにしましょう。
Forty years ago Cardinal Richard Cushing was telling Cardinal Francis Spellman about an incident at an ecumenical gathering in Boston: “At Mass all of a sudden most of the Protestant delegates were coming up for Communion, and there I was, trying to decide what to do.”
[At that time it was Catholic law that communion must never be given to non-Catholic Christians. Now Church law permits it in special circumstances, though it would still technically probably not be permitted in this situation.]
“But what did you do?” asked Spellman.
“Well,” said Cushing, “I asked myself, ‘What would Jesus have done?’”
Spellman cried, “O my God, you didn’t!?”

When I first heard this story in America many years ago everyone in the room burst out in laughter. But when I told it in a homily in Japan a few days ago everyone looked puzzled. If you don’t see what’s funny about it, check back on this blog in a few days and I’ll try to have an answer for you.
